Colour and behaviour: iron stains are orange-brown, sharply bounded, and unmoved by ordinary washing — unlike tannin’s tea-brown gradients or dye transfer’s colour cast (Purple Magic territory). The confirming test is response: a drop of Rustaway on an inconspicuous corner lifts true iron visibly. Diagnose before treating; the spotting table exists because each family ignores the others’ chemistry.

Because metal-side rust chemistry (Phoskleen, Chloracid 90) is formulated at acid strengths that condition steel — on cellulose fibre it doesn’t remove the stain so much as remove the fabric, leaving weakened patches that tear at the next wash. Rustaway is the fabric-formulated product: strong enough for the iron, buffered for the fibre. Same chemistry family, entirely different engineering — which is why both live in the Cernol range under different names.

Spot Rustaway onto the dry marks, allow the label dwell, rinse the treated zones, then wash normally — never chlorine-bleach first, because hypochlorite sets iron stains permanently (it oxidises the iron deeper into the fibre). For a whole batch marked by a rusty water event, treat the worst pieces individually and run the batch with the corrected programme. And never tumble-dry a still-marked piece: heat is the point of no return.

Test the water: recurring, batch-wide iron marking almost always traces to the supply — borehole iron, a corroding geyser or dying galvanised pipes — not the wash process. A simple iron test tells you which; if it is the geyser or pipes, descaling and replacement beat any amount of spotting, and if it is the borehole, filtration at the machine feed is the fix.
